Static Electricity and Static Damage |
|||||
We rarely see static damage problems these days, due to the quality of the equipment. We have seen some static damage in the older 2E devices, almost none in the newer 2EW devices, and no documented cases of static damage in any Atlantis devices. While static electricity may be present in your office, the BrainMaster equipment is very tolerant of it. Nonetheless, if you observe static electricity, you should take some steps to reduce it.
If static is present in your environment, you may observe "sparks" when you or a trainee touch a metal object, the sensor leads, or other object. This may be related to the CRT (cathode ray tube) on your PC. Flat panels seem to generate much less static electricity. All PC's generate some of this static, but some are worse than others. The difference may also relate to your environment. At work you may have antistatic carpeting or your desk or PC may be better grounded, etc. It is annoying, but is not a problem unless you then zap some other equipment, and cause damage. This is a remote possibility,
but still a possibility. Having your clothes stick tells you that you have unusually high static. Good idea to do something about it.
Your best bet is to get an antistatic mat and put it under your chair.
There are also antistatic devices you can get, including wrist straps, and even devices that sit over the CRT screen and reduce the static.
You can also purchase antistatic spray in cans, and spray it around your work area when you sit down to work. It works well, but only temporarily.
It is also possible that your PC is not properly grounded. You can get grounding cords to ground your PC chassis and CRT to ground.
Your PC supplier should be able to provide standard products to help you alleviate this problem. |
